
George Shaya, born on 30 October 1946 in Mbare, Harare, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest players in Zimbabwean football history. His football journey began in the dusty streets of Mbare, where he honed his skills with makeshift balls and developed a unique flair that would mesmerize fans for years. Shaya’s talent shone brightly at Dynamos Football Club, where he helped cement the club’s status as a football powerhouse. In 1969, Shaya made history by becoming the first Black winner of the Rhodesian Soccer Star of the Year award a prestigious honour previously dominated by white players during colonial rule. His performances for Dynamos and the Rhodesian national team, especially his efforts against Australia during World Cup qualifiers, were nationally celebrated.

His legacy is unmatched, Shaya won the Soccer Star of the Year award a record five times in 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976, and 1977 with three consecutive wins marking the peak of his career. As captain and inspirational leader on the pitch, Shaya was known for immense energy and true sportsmanship despite his small stature. He briefly played for Moroka Swallows in South Africa, further showcasing his talents beyond Zimbabwe. Through a career spanning 17 years, Shaya’s impact on Zimbabwean football remains profound, setting a standard that few, if any, have ever matched. His record as the Soccer Star of the Year is still unbeaten, and his status as Dynamos’ and Zimbabwe’s greatest ever player is secure in football history.
