ZIFA Proposes Expansion of Premier Soccer League to 20 Teams for 2026 Season

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has expressed its gratitude to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for its ongoing commitment to advancing football development and professionalism in the country. In an official communication, the Association commended the League’s consistent efforts in maintaining high standards of administration, competition, and commercial growth.Building on this collaborative spirit, ZIFA has formally proposed expanding the Premier Soccer League from the current 18 teams to 20, beginning with the 2026 season.

The proposed expansion aligns with ZIFA’s strategic mandate to promote inclusive growth, enhance competition, and further professionalize football at all levels in Zimbabwe.
According to the Association, increasing the number of participating teams will create broader opportunities for emerging clubs, improve regional representation, and foster greater talent development across the nation. It is also expected to boost community engagement and fan participation, laying a stronger foundation for the long-term sustainability of Zimbabwean football.

ZIFA emphasized that its decision follows careful consultation and planning, taking into account the League’s operational capacity, club readiness, and infrastructure considerations. Discussions between ZIFA and PSL stakeholders are expected to continue in the coming months, with implementation details to be finalized before the start of the 2026 league campaign.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the PSL and other football stakeholders to ensure that the growth of the domestic league continues to match international standards and reflects the passion of Zimbabwean fans nationwide.
